Supporting Small-Scale Farmers through advocacy and reform

Small-scale farmers play a crucial role in food security, biodiversity, and rural economies. Their dedication to sustainable farming practices preserves our environment and supports local economies. However, they often face significant challenges, including limited access to resources, financial instability, and policy barriers.

This is where we aim to help. Sprout exists to grow and support our industry and advocate for policies and practices that ensure sustainable growth, equitable access to resources, and a prosperous future for these essential stewards of the land.

ongoing focus areas

Right now, the areas we are focused on are:

  • Working with and supporting STAMP (Southern Tasmanian Association of Meat Producers)
  • Liaising with producers and regulators around accreditation for commercial egg producers
  • The interpretation of new standards for the production and processing of leafy vegetables, melons and berries.

Other ideas we have from listening to the industry:

  • Education pathways for those wanting to learn small scale, mixed enterprise farming in Tasmania
  • Seeking commitments from both major state political parties to formulate a small scale producer strategy for Tasmania as a true enabler of our local food system.
  • Working towards providing better access to capital for small-scale and regenerative farmers.
  • Improved training and better knowledge on animal welfare.
